    Multicultural sources of rock, examined through text-related lectures, listening to recordings, and viewing documentary videos. As an overview for non-music majors, the course is intended to broaden students’ socio-cultural perspectives. The diversity of American popular music offers a direct reflection of, and at times a focus for, many factors in identifying and appreciating subcultures of age, ethnicity, gender, race, region, and religion.

    A music course for beginners with no theory background. The study of the elements of music, systems of sounds, pitch, meter, rhythm, note values, dynamics, manuscript, etc. Identification, nomenclature, and performance will be carried out through a programmed text, lecture and practical application through singing and playing. This is a foundation course in theory and composition.

    Study of jazz based on listening and class discussion. The course is intended to increase awareness of the roots of jazz within the African-American community and of the cross-cultural fertilizations occurring throughout its recent history. Although academic and technical studies of jazz were established in the 50s, it is only within the past fifteen years that these studies have led to the recognition of jazz as a truly valued American art form.     Exploration of a variety of computer applications that can be utilized by musicians. After learning to use a music notation program, students investigate MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) technology.     An introductory exploration of the fundamentals of electronic music. Historical background will cover masterpieces of the repertoire, as well as its influence on contemporary artists like Radiohead and Björk.  Readings will challenge the student to develop a personal aesthetic about sound.  Students will demonstrate mastery of techniques in Musique Concrete, Sampling, and Additive Synthesis through completion of original compositions, culminating in an end-of-semester concert. This is a studio project-based class.  Platforms covered include: Peak, AudioSculpt, ProTools, and Max/MSP.

    Increases the performance abilities and awareness of all music majors. It will include attendance at recitals, performance classes and workshops and will deal with traditional music as well as music from diverse cultures. It will give students the opportunity to perform or have their own compositions performed, including vocal, instrumental and electronic media. It will also deal with stage deportment, structuring of recital programs, and other matters relating to musical performance.

    Development of music skills as used in music therapy sessions, examined through lectures, reviewed through selective repertoire survey, and practiced through in-class music making. This class prepares students for MUS 307 through portfolio development and in-class music making opportunities.
  
  • MUS 307 - Topics In Music Therapy

    Prerequisites: MUS 305
    Integration of theory and practice in music therapy through in-class presentations and field experience. Students are required to prepare and present a short-term music therapy activity project for a specific community setting in the first seven weeks of the semester. Students then implement this activity project by giving a case presentation to the class and video taping their case work. Practicum sites may include a school, day care center, residential facility, or community center.

    A practical study of the historical styles of the jazz piano tradition with an emphasis on the inclusion of these elements in the student’s developing style.     A survey of the historical development of eletronic music in techno, hip-hop, and rock genres will be combined with technical instruciton in the studio to recreate “old-school” sounds, as well as make new sounds that push the boundaries of the contemporary scene. Building upon the technical knowledge of the prerequisite courses, students will continue to develop their fluency in Max/MSP, ProTools, Peak, and Ircam software, as well as be introduced to Reason.

    Exploration of the aesthetic and technical issues relating to the synchronization of sound and video. Audio is dealt with not only through music but also through sound design (the establishment of environment through the medium of sound). Course work focuses primarily on assignments and studio projects.
  
  • MUS 324 - Synthesizer Programming Techniques

    Prerequisites: MUS 223 or permission of instructor
    Exploration of sound design. Advanced programming techniques on analog and digital synthesizers, sound design, and the use of editor/librarian programs are explored. In addition to readings, quizzes and lectures, there will be a minimum of three hours studio work per week.

    Developing facility in using various digital recording media. The course provides detailed exploration of relevant equipment, recording and microphone techniques, audio post production with Pro Tools, and audio CD production. In addition to readings, quizzes and lectures, there will be a minimum of three hours group recording or individual studio time per week.

    Rotating topics covered in this class will include: advanced synthesis techniques, digital signal processing, electronic instrument building and performance, interactive sound installations, and interactive video. Continuing development of fluencyin Max/MSP programming language from MUS 322. A feature of the class will be working with physical controllers (proximity sensors,  infrared sensors, flex sensors, pressure sensors) that will work with Max/MSP, which will be used in the final project.     A fifteen-week full-time classroom experience in approved public schools of Massachusetts under the direction of the university music faculty and cooperating classroom teachers.

    Students must meet the requirements for admission having completed all Music courses with a minimum grade of B- and have the permission of the Director of Teacher Education in the Music Department and the Chairperson of the Music Department. In addition, students will need three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from the Director of the Music Education program, and at least one other from a member of the Music faculty. Students will need to have passed the Massachusetts Teacher Education Licensure exams in Comprehension and Literacy as well as the content area, Music.
