PSY 570 - Advanced Group Processes

3 credits
Prerequisite: Psychology graduate status

The course examines the basic principles of group dynamics and the applications of those principles to group therapy. The course considers how groups are formed and sustained, how change occurs in groups, and howthe group leader facilitates that change. The development of groups from inception to termination will be addressed, including: group composition and structure, selection and preparation, and the stages of group process.  The course will focus on general group concepts, but will also examineseveral different theoretical approaches to group therapy. A variety of teaching methods will be employed, including: didactic components, reading material, discussion, video, and class presentations. A substantial component of the course is also experiential. A portion of most classes

will involve the participants in a group process experience during which each participant will either be a group member, an observer, or a co-leader. This is an important element of the course, designed to provide at least some measure of the experience of being both a member of a group and a group leader.
