The Charlton College of Business serves three distinct and important stakeholders: undergraduate and graduate major students, students from other academic units in the university, and the broader professional and business community.
The Charlton College offers six undergraduate programs in business, all leading to the Bachelor of Science degree. These programs are designed to prepare the graduate for careers in management, accounting, finance, production management, and management information systems, or graduate study. The college also offers the Masters in Business Administration (MBA), and Masters of Science degrees in Accounting, Healthcare Management and Technology Management.
The college offers a minor in Business Administration that helps non-business majors acquire an understanding of business essentials. Business majors may choose from 7 different minors or they may take minors from other colleges. Charlton also offers a post-baccalaureate certificate in accounting for those preparing to sit for the CPA examination, a minor in International Business, and minors in each functional area including accounting, finance, management information systems, management, operations management, and marketing.
Students in the Charlton College of Business engage in projects and case studies that involve all business areas: accounting, finance, management, management information systems, operations management and marketing. Each student’s studies combine advanced specialization in the major field with real breadth through courses in arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences; and foundation knowledge through studies in behavioral science, economics, mathematics, statistics and oral and written communication. Students also gain an understanding of ethical and global issues; political, social, legal, environmental and technological issues; and the impact of diversity on organizations.

Earle P Charlton
The college is honored to carry Earle P Charlton’s name. Mr Charlton, who began his retail empire in 1890 in Fall River, Massachusetts, co-founded F W Woolworth Company. A substantial gift to the university by the Charlton Charitable Trust enabled UMass Dartmouth to construct the Charlton College building which opened in fall 2005.
In the words of his grandson, Earle P Charlton II, “This is the American Dream. My grandfather started with nothing and built an empire of 53 stores across New England to the Pacific Coast and in Canada. He was an inspiration to me, my hero. He wanted to make a difference in the world.”
The gift acknowledges a strong belief in the value of public education in our society and in the importance of private support for it. His grandfather “never had the opportunity to go to college,” explains Earle P Charlton II, yet “I know he would be extremely proud to give to these students … the opportunity to get the education he missed.”
The Charlton College of Business is accredited by AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). The College is also a member of this organization.

General Requirements for Undergraduate Programs
Transfer of Credit
Generally, lower-level business course credits (first and second year courses) can be transferred from community or other colleges, assuming the course work is comparable to that offered at UMass Dartmouth. All transfer credits that apply to the degree are given at the discretion of the college.
Applicants should refer to the Mass Transfer Program and Articulation Agreements to determine the courses that will transfer from community colleges and universities. Information can be found at:
Transfer students from community colleges must comply with the university requirement to complete at least 60 credits at UMass Dartmouth; furthermore, students must complete at least 30 credits of upper-level business courses at UMass Dartmouth. Transferred 100 or 200 level business elective courses cannot receive upper-division business elective credit.
Students can transfer 75 credits from 4 year colleges. Other requirements for upper-level courses apply as above. Business credits from online degree programs will be accepted for transfer only from AACSB Accredited schools.
Change of Major to Business
Students will be admitted to the college if they meet one of the following two criteria:
They must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher after earning a minimum of 24 credit hours or they must be in overall good academic standing in their current major and have a GPA of 2.7 or higher in the following core business courses:
- ACT 211 Principles of Accounting
- MTH 146 Finite Math
- POM 212 Business Statistics
- ECO 231 Principles of Microeconomics
Non-Business majors are prohibited by AACSB from taking more than 21 credit hours of business courses. In addition, Non-Business majors may not take 300/400 level courses within any of the business majors without permission of the office of the Dean of the Charlton College of Business. Non-Business majors with more than 21 credit hours will be dis-enrolled from all business courses.
