SOA 379 - The Creation of Inequality Credits 3 Lecture / 3 hours per week Requirements: Prerequisite: SOA 101 or SOA 111 or SOA 113 An examination of the variety of human cultures, archeologically and ethnographically, from simple hunting and gathering bands to more complex societies including early city states and empires. The course explores in what sense these early hunting and gathering societies are or are not egalitarian and considers how hierarchy develops in a variety of contexts, including big-man societies, stratified chiefdoms and early states. Dimensions of equality and inequality including class and gender are examined. Cross-listed with ANT 379 Graded
