PHL 359 - Heidegger & Continental Philosophy Credits 3 Lecture / 3 hours per week Requirements: Prerequisite: Semester course in Philosophy or permission of instructor Detailed study of Heidegger’s hermeneutic phenomenology, investigated as a response to a historical view of subjectivity initiated by Descartes and continued by Kant and Husserl. More broadly, the course examines Heidegger’s view that his philosophy was a corrective to the tradition of Western metaphysics. Heidegger’s influence on Derrida, Merleau-Ponty, and Gadamer, among others, is examined. The implications of Heidegger’s thinking in relation to theories of human cognition and the possibility of artificial intelligence is also explored. Graded
