Liberal Arts Major

Requirements


 

Seven of the 10 classes must be at the 300 or 400 levels. Pre-requisites in the major concentration department are the student’s responsibility and do not count towards the 15 credits in each concentration unless listed as a concentration requirement.

Liberal Arts Core


Six (6) credits required, plus the Intermediate Writing course, ENL 260.

Choose Two Concentrations


Fifteen (15) credits required in each concentration, for a total of thirty (30) credits. Choose two: Art History, Economics, English, Foreign Literature & Languages, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Portuguese Studies, Sociology and Anthropology, Sustainability, Urban Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies.

Art History


ARH Core


Three (3) credits required.

Note: ARH 125 and ARH 150 are prerequisites for ARH 200. LAR Majors who want to concentrate in Art History are encouraged to build these pre-reqs into their distribution requirement courses at the 100 level.

Seminar


Three (3) credits required at the 400 level.

Economics


Core


Six (6) credits required.

Note: ECO 231 and ECO 232 are prerequisites for many 300 level courses, including ECO 301 and ECO 311.

Intermediate


Three (3) credits required from the following:

Six (6) additional credits required of 300-400-level Economics electives.

Historical Literature


Two upper-level historical literature courses from the following list. One course from Pre-1800 and one course from Post-1800.

Note: ENL 259 is prerequisite for all 400 level Literature seminars.

Note: You may take both courses, or repeat SUS 202 with a change of topic, in which case the second course will fulfill the “any level” requirement in the table below.

Students must take twelve (12) elective credits in Sustainability courses from the lists below.

These courses must be drawn from at least two of the three Sustainability content areas. Three of these courses (9 credits) must be numbered 300 or higher. Sustainability electives offered within your second concentration may count toward EITHER the Sustainability concentration OR the other concentration, but not both!

Urban Studies

Students must complete the core URB course (3 credits):

  • URB 201: City Life: Introduction to Urban Studies

Students must complete the following elective requirements from the approved lists below:

  • Three (3) credits of approved Urban Studies electives at any level
  • Nine (9) credits of approved Urban Studies electives at the upper level (300-400)
