Sociology and anthropology are closely related disciplines that focus on our social and cultural worlds. Both emphasize understanding systems of inequality and power, and the interrelationship between global and local processes. We offer an interdisciplinary major in Sociology and Anthropology; students will select a concentration in Anthorpology or a concentration in Sociology as described below.
A major in this department provides a foundation for social action, a variety of professional careers ranging from community organizing to public administration, as well as for graduate work in a variety of disciplines including policy studies, sociology, anthropology and women and gender studies.
UMass Dartmouth students seeking admission to the Sociology and Anthropology major must have earned a minimum of 30 credits with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50. Transfer students seeking admission to Sociology and Anthropology must have at minimum a 2.75 GPA overall. Students interested in selecting this major must see the department chair for permission to enter the program, to discuss the program requirements and to arrange for a permanent advisor.
Students who entered the major prior to Fall 2014 are not required to take SOA 211, Thinking through Writing in Sociology and Anthropology. They will take one additional “any level” elective.
Overall Departmental Requirements
To successfully complete the program for graduation, all students must:
- Maintain a minimum of 2.75 GPA in the major; students who entered the major prior to fall 2009, must maintain a GPA of 2.5 in the majorr
- Complete all courses counting for the major with a C- or higher.
- Maintain a minimum of a 2.0 overall GPA
- Meet the Sociology and Anthropology major requirements (18 credits of core required classes and 18 credits of electives for both concentrations; see below for specific requirements for each concentration)
- Complete 30 credits at the 300/400 level (this includes courses in the major, excluding Experiential Learning)
- Complete a minimum of 120 credits, at least 45 of which must be earned at UMass Dartmouth

Sociology Concentration
Sociology is the study of social behavior and the socio-cultural settings in which it occurs. It involves the study of whole societies and their basic institutions as well as smaller scale groups such as the family, peer group and neighborhood. Sociology has long been a popular major for students planning future training in such professions as social work, law, politics, education, public administration, public health and health care, and urban planning.
Students electing the Sociology concentration will complete 36 credits:
6 required core classes (18 credits)
6 SOA electives (18 credits)
