Artificial Intelligence Minor

This minor prepares students with the core concepts and industry knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI). In this minor, students will acquire skills in developing intelligent software, utilizing AI tools, and performing data analytics associated with AI. Upon completion of this minor, students will be able to apply working knowledge in fields related to artificial intelligence, including but not limited to general AI, machine learning, robotics, health care, and game design.

Requirements

Required Core Courses

Complete the following four courses:

CIS 180 - Object-Oriented Prog I Credits: 4
CIS 180 must be completed with a grade of C or better and may be substituted with any 3-credit programming course on high-level language, e.g., Python, C++, C#, C, and R. Substituted course requires department approval.
CIS 360 - Algorithms & Data Struct Credits: 4
(or CIS 322 - Data Structures and Fundamental Algorithms, Credits: 3). Either course must be completed with a grade of C or better.
CIS 362 - Empirical Meth Comp Sci Credits: 3
(or CIS 381 - Social & Ethical Aspects of Computing)
CIS 412 - Artificial Intelligence Credits: 3
CIS 412 must be completed with a grade of C or better.

Elective Courses

Choose two courses from the following list. These courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.

University Policy on Minors

To declare a minor, students must meet the university’s admission requirements for a minor, which include having earned 24 credits. Prospective minors are encouraged to inquire and plan their minor program prior to earning 24 credits, because the structure of requirements could necessitate the use of more than six semesters. Courses completed prior to formal declaration will count toward the minor program.

Minors consist of at least 18 credits, of which 9 credits must be at the upper division (300-400) level. Within these 9 upper level credits, a course can be counted in only one category. Even if a course could satisfy either the student’s major or the minor, it cannot be double-counted. A college may define electives that are permitted to be used towards the minor. A department offering a minor may establish other requirements beyond these minimal requirements. A minor must be completed at the time of the degree and will be so noted on the student’s transcript. A student cannot be readmitted to the University to complete only a minor.
