Post-Baccalaureate Certificate (PBC) in Artisanry
The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate (PBC) in Artisanry is for students who already have earned a baccalaureate degree and who are interested in pursuing further study. This one-year, nine-credit program is for those who want to extend learning by participating within a community of undergraduate and graduate degree-seeking students to focus solely upon studio development. The objective is to assist those entering professional practice and/or to prepare for applying to MFA degree programs. PBC students have full use of studio facilities, attend visiting artist lectures, participate in all media area activities/topic based seminars, and enroll in technical studio or academic courses at reduced credit load. Regularly scheduled critiques occur, and a comprehensive show of studio work will be presented upon completion. The Artisanry PBC culminates in an exhibition at the year’s end, which is planned and executed by PBC students and which is installed in commercial spaces in New Bedford.
Artisanry PBC students take 4.5 credits per semester. In the fall, the courses are ART 508 (Portfolio Intensive I) for 3 credits, plus 1.5 credits of Independent Study. In the spring, the courses are ART 509 (Portfolio Intensive II) for 3 credits, plus 1.5 credits of Independent Study. With relevant approvals, the 1.5 credit course may be taken from media-area support courses such as Clay/Glaze Formulation, Kiln Building, Enameling, Textile Design CAD, Screen Printing, History of Craft, Senior Seminar or any other courses offered that address the learning objectives.
Applications for admission to the Artisanry PBC are submitted to the Office of Graduate Admission. Applications for Fall admission are typically considered until early summer. Application materials required include 10 images submitted via Slideroom (https://umassd.slideroom.com), a statement of purpose, official transcripts of all post-secondary education, and three letters of recommendation.
Students who are admitted to this program may be eligible for federal student loan assistance.
Should a PBC student be accepted into the UMass Dartmouth MFA program, the relevant PBC credits can count toward the MFA degree.
