Professional Writing and Communication MA

Students in the Professional Writing & Communication graduate program meet a growing demand for professional communicators in the workplace—people who can develop multi-modal texts for a variety of purposes and audiences. Our students take classes in document design, rhetorical theory, web development & design, stylistics, and user experience. They also complete internships and develop a portfolio of work to demonstrate their expertise within a specific area of interest—corporate communications; social media and public relations strategies; content development and management; technical and science communication; information design. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to apply what they do in the classroom to their professional interests.

Degree requirements: 33 credits. Requirements include: 

  • Six core courses (18 credits)
  • Three elective courses (9 credits)
  • Internship (3 credits)
  • Thesis portfolio (3 credits)

Requirements


You must complete 33 total credits.

You are required to take six core 500-level courses:

Elective Courses


You may take additional core courses or choose from among these courses to fulfill the remainder of your course requirements.

Internships


You are required to take one internship; you may take a maximum of two with approval from the graduate program director. See thesis or project requirements.

Thesis Portfolio


Students develop a portfolio to demonstrate their expertise in professional writing and communication, registering for the following:

  • Credits: variable; .00 to 3.00
  • If you do not complete your thesis in the semester for which you are registered for 750, you may continue by taking zero-credit Thesis continuation.
