Public Policy Online Graduate Certificates

In addition to a Master of Public Policy (MPP) degree, the Department of Public Policy offers several online graduate certificate program options to its students. There are three graduate certificate programs: Educational Policy, Environmental Policy, and Public Management.

Online Graduate Certificate in Educational Policy


The Online Educational Policy Graduate Certificate offers students an excellent opportunity to develop substantive knowledge in educational policy and practical analytical skills that can be applied in a variety of educational and policy settings. The curriculum is desiged to meet certain learning competencies, which can be reviewed here: Education Competencies (PDF).

A completed graduate certificate waives the GRE requirement for those considering application to the Master of Public Policy (MPP) Program. In addition, each class counted towards the graduate certificate will be accepted into the MPP program (for certificate holders who apply and are accepted into the MPP program) so long as the student earned a 3.0 (B average) or higher in the course.

The Online Educational Policy Graduate Certificate Program is designed to provide students with:

  • the critical knowledge and skills required to understand and impact educational policy in the United States
  • a detailed understanding of the unique financial and organizational challenges faced by 21st century educational institutions
  • a fluency and in-depth understanding of contemporary debates in education policy
  • a contextual background regarding the historical, political, social, and economic influences on educational policy and practice in the United States

 

Students must complete 12 total credits (four courses) including:

Online Graduate Certificate in Environmental Policy


The Online Environmental Policy Graduate Certificate provides students a foundation in public policy and the environment while introducing environmental issues of local, state, regional, national, and global concern. The curriculum is desgined to meet certain learning competencies, which can be reviewed in the Environment Competencies document.

A completed graduate certificate waives the GRE requirement for those considering application to the Master of Public Policy (MPP) Program. In addition, each class counted towards the graduate certificate will be accepted into the MPP program (for certificate holders who apply and are accepted into the MPP program) so long as the student earned a 3.0 (B average) or higher in the course.

The Online Environmental Policy Graduate Certificate provides students with competency in the following areas:

  • Developing an understanding of the genesis and purposes of environmental policy;
  • Develop the ability to analyze, synthezise, think critically, and make decisions about environmental issues;
  • Fostering the development and implementation of environmentally sound policies and practices; and
  • Communicating, leading, and managing the public governance aspects of environmental policy.

Successful completion of the certificate should enhance a student’s current career or aid in the development of new job skills.

 

Students must complete 12 total credits (four courses) including:

    *Note on POL611 Administrative Law: Certificate students wishing to apply to the Master of Public Policy (MPP) Program after completion of the certificate must apply this course to the core course requirements of the MPP. This will necessitate students taking another concentration course in order to satisfy the MPP requirements. 

Online Graduate Certificate in Public Management


The Online Public Management Graduate Certificate exposes students to the essential principles of public management within the context of public policy. Students learn about the foundation of policy development and public management. From this foundation students choose from a variety of electives that focus on areas which include state and local public finance, regional economic development, program evaluation, and other aspects critical to public management. The Online Public Management Graduate Certficate aims to provide the following competencies:

  • An understanding of the foundations of public management;
  • Exposure to the essential principles of public management within the context of public policy;
  • Development of the necessary concepts and applied theory to operate in the public management field; and
  • The ability to manage and communicate in the field public governance.

Successful completion of the certificate should enhance a student’s current career or aid in the development of new job skills.
