MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING–INDUSTRIAL & SYSTEMS ENGINEERING OPTION

Objectives

College of Engineering at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth offers a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering with option in Industrial & Systems Engineering. This graduate program is designed to provide education to working engineering professionals to advance in their careers in industrial and systems engineering. The program provides an integrated approach to engineering and management of production systems and engineering organization. Graduates of the program will achieve professional competence in concepts, knowledge, methodologies, and skills required for production system design/operations, quality assurance, and management in an engineering environment.

The program will require five graduate courses (15 credits) that are offered by Mechanical Engineering and three courses (9 credits) by Charlton College of Business. Project study (6 credits) under the guidance of academic advisors is also required. The total credit requirement is 30 credits. Participants completing both courses and project requirements will receive MS degree in Mechanical Engineering–Industrial & Systems Engineering Option. The qualifications for enrollment and requirements for this program are described below.

Admission

A BS or an equivalent degree in engineering or a closely related field is required. Admission of applicants with non-engineering undergraduate degrees will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Professional Master’s Program Committee. The program is administrared by the Mechanical Engineering Department.

Required courses

  • Five courses from Mechanical Engineering course options (listed below)

  • Three courses from Charlton College of Business course options (listed below)

  • MNE590 Masters Project (6 credits): this could be a project related to student’s current position in the workplace.

Masters Project

After one semester of taking courses, the student will choose a permanent advisor capable of advising them on conducting project chosen by the student and approved by the advisor. Frequently, projects are related to student’s engineering duties in the workplace. Students who do not have a work-related project will choose a faculty advisor who may sponsor a project. The Masters Project requires approval of the Professional Master’s Program Committee.

The masters project committee shall consist of at least three members, at least one member must be ME faculty, the second member must be either ME faculty or faculty affiliated to ME department, and the third member may be a senior scientist or engineer from outside the university or a faculty in another department/university.

The members of student’s project committee will be selected by the faculty advisor in consultation with the student. The project and committee must be approved by the Graduate Program Director.

There are three (3) phases of project preparation:

  1. Submit the project proposal. In this phase the committee is formed.
  2. Conduct Research and prepare a project report.

Oral Project Defense. Note, the University’s guidelines on announcement of defense sessions apply and must be followed. The project advisor and student must work with the MNE Administrative Assistant for timely announcement of the defense session.

Advising

Upon admission, each student will be assigned to a temporary advisor by the GPD. The temporary advisor will assist the new student in selecting courses in the first semester. After one semester of taking courses, the student will choose a permanent advisor.
