MAT - Non-Licensure Programs

The Department of Education offers three MAT non-licensure programs:

  • MAT for Pre-Service Teachers (30 credits)

  • MAT for In-Service Teachers (30 credits)

  • MAT for In-Service Teachers: On-Site Program (30 credits)

 

MAT for Pre-Service Teachers (30 credits)


The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Pre-Service track is designed for students who are entering the field with little or no teaching experience. Students will earn a master’s degree in teaching and a Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) endorsement at program completion. Initial licensure is obtained through an employment-based practicum outside of the program. Students pursuing this option will apply to the MAT Non-Licensure track and follow the course sequence below.

Required Courses (24 credits)


Elective Course (3 credits)


Students must complete a Graduate-level Content or EDU Course for an additional 3 credits.

Special Education Add-On License Option


Students must complete an additional 6 credits of coursework in the courses below beyond the 30 required for the MAT.

Teaching English as a Second Language Concentration


Students must complete an additional 3 credits of coursework from the courses below beyond the 30 required for the MAT.

Special Education Concentration


Students must complete an additional 3 credits of coursework from the courses below beyond the 30 required for the MAT.

MAT for In-Service Teachers (30 credits)


The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) In-Service track is designed for candidates who are currently teaching and need to advance a Provisional license. Students will earn a master’s degree in teaching. Initial licensure is obtained through an employment-based practicum outside of the MAT program. Students pursuing this option will apply to the MAT Non-Licensure track and follow the course sequence below.

Elective Courses (12 credits)


Students must additionally complete four Graduate-level Content Courses for a total of 12 credits.

Special Education Add-On License Option


Students must complete an additional 6 credits of coursework in the courses below beyond the 30 required for the MAT.

Teaching English as a Second Language Concentration


Students in this concentration will substitute the four content elective courses for the following:

MAT for In-Service Teachers: On-Site Program (30 credits)


The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) - In-Service on-site track is designed for students who are currently teaching in Fall River, New Bedford, or Southbridge public schools and need to advance an Initial or Provisional license. Students will earn a master’s degree in teaching (MAT). Initial licensure is obtained through an employment-based practicum outside of the MAT program. Students pursuing this option will apply to the MAT Non-Licensure track and follow the course sequence below.

This program is context-specific, where curricular objectives are aligned to district selected goals.
