Return to: Colleges, Departments, and Programs
The English as a Second Language (ESL) Certificate Program provides the theoretical and practical knowledge related to language acquisition for teaching diverse bilingual/multilingual students including English language learners in various academic contexts.
This 4-course series will provide coverage of all required Subject Matter Knowledge for licensure in English as a Second Language set forth by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as well as the 150-hour supervised practicum/internship required to add the ESL license to an existing Massachussetts initial license. The program can be completed in as little as one year.
Candidates who already possess an initial license in another field will receive the initial license in ESL once they pass the ESL MTEL and provide evidence of 150 hours of instruction in an ESL setting.
This program does not provide endorsement but enables candidates to seek endorsement directly from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
