Bioengineering Minor

The minor will provide students a unique opportunity to obtain multidisciplinary life sciences and engineering background along with a core foundation in biological science and engineering principles. Upon completion of the minor, the student will have the knowledge to work in the biomedical device industry or other fields involving interactions of biology and engineering.

In order to meet the requirements for the minor, each course must be passed with a minimum grade of C- (C minus) and the minimum GPA in the minor must be at least 2.000. Students shall work with their faculty advisors on the suitability of the Technical Elective courses they choose. While not required, students should consider completing Chemistry (CHM 151 or CHM 153, and CHM 152) if interested in topics such as Biomaterials.

The Program Objectives are:

Students will understand the fundamental principles in biology and physiology.
Students will develop basic skills of using engineering approaches to solve problems in medical science and bioprocesses.
Students will learn advanced knowledge in a specific bioengineering area.

University Policy on Minors

To declare a minor, the student must be a degree candidate and receive permission from the department offering the minor, as well as the college to which the department is attached. Requirements may vary by department and/or college. Prospective minors are encouraged to inquire and plan their minor early because the structure of requirements could necessitate the use of more than six semesters. Courses completed prior to formal declaration will count toward the minor program.

Minors consist of at least 18 credits, of which 9 credits must be at the upper division (300-400) level. A department offering a minor may establish other requirements beyond these minimal requirements. A minor must be completed at the time of the degree and will be so noted on the student’s transcript. A student cannot be readmitted to the University to complete only a minor.
