Civil and Environmental Engineering Minor

The minor is intended for students in other majors, who have an interest in Civil and Environmental Engineering and will provide students a unique opportunity to obtain a multidisciplinary engineering background along with a core foundation in basic sciences and engineering principles. Upon completion of the minor, the student will have the knowledge to work in the Civil and Environmental Engineering fields in a variety of capacities.

Any degree candidate may request admission to a minor in Civil and Environmental Engineering. The completion of the minor requires a minimum of 18 total credits that consist of 9 credits of required core courses, and 9 credits of elective courses as well as a 2.000 GPA in the courses required for the minor. The minor is flexible in the elective courses to allow students to take courses within their area of interest (e.g. structural, environmental, water resources, transportation, or geotechnical engineering). Students should be aware that some of the courses may require additional prerequisites.

The Program Objectives are:

1. Students will understand the fundamental principles in civil and environmental engineering.

2. Students will develop engineering approaches and problem solving skills in civil and environmental engineering.

3. Students will develop advanced knowledge in a specific area including structural engineering, environmental & water resources, geotechnical engineering, transportation, and coastal engineering.

Any three approved CEN 300 or 400 level course (per consultation with the CEN faculty minor advisor). Please note that some of these courses may require additional prerequisites.

University Policy on Minors

To declare a minor, the student must be a degree candidate and must receive permission from the department offering the minor, as well as the college to which the department is attached. Requirements may vary by department and/or college. Prospective minors are encouraged to inquire and plan their minor program early because the structure of requirements could necessitate the use of more than six semesters. Courses completed prior to formal declaration will count toward the minor program.

Minors consist of at least 18 credits, of which 9 credits must be at the upper division (300-400) level. A college may define electives that are permitted to be used towards the minor. A department offering a minor may establish other requirements beyond these minimal requirements. A minor must be completed at the time of the degree and will be so noted on the student’s transcript. A student cannot be readmitted to the University to complete only a minor.
