MTH 121 - Women in Mathematics3 credits M Prerequisites: Satisfactory score on mathematics placement exam Developing math literacy through a study of the lives and work of notable women mathematicians. Six women mathematicians, from Hypatia to Emmy Noether, are discussed at length, with emphasis on obstacles faced and equity issues. The fields in which they worked are introduced along with sample problems. Topics include conic sections, Diophantine equations, Fibonocci sequences, partial differential equations, and other concepts. As a final project, students are expected to research an additional notable woman mathematician and present her work and life.
