International Business Certificate

The International Business Certificate Program offers a unique opportunity for students to gain exposure to international business through a combination of coursework and travel in an overseas setting.

The program is open to College of Business degree students who are interested in international business.

The Certificate consists of 21 credit hours, which must include an overseas experience (see below), and will be awarded with the diploma at graduation, providing that the student has at least a 2.5 GPA in the Certificate Courses.

The overseas experience can be fulfilled in one of the following ways:

UMD/CCB sponsored course that has a minimum overseas stay of 2 weeks;
A semester abroad at a partner university;
A summer session at a partner university;
A year abroad at a partner university

During the course of the overseas experience students may take up to 9 credits of course work (or the equivalent) which would fulfill the requirements of the Certificate.

Courses in Foreign Language Elementary or Intermediate Level - 6 credits

Required Upper Division Elective courses

Courses in Business

Choose one from the following:

MGT 320 - International Management 3 credits
MKT 420 - International Marketing 3 credits
FIN 494 - International Financial Management 3 credits

Courses in Economics or Political Science

Choose one from the following:

ECO 371 - International Trade 3 credits
ECO 372 - International Finance 3 credits
PSC 360 - Politics and Governments of Western Europe 3 credits
PSC 361 - Chinese Government and Politics 3 credits
PSC 363 - Politics and Government of the Middle East 3 credits
PSC 381 - Contemporary International Relations 3 credits
PSC 393 - Portugal and the European Union 3 credits
PSC 394 - The Politics of European Integration 3 credits
PSC 395 - Politics and Development of Modern Portugal 3 credits

Additional Upper Division Elective courses

Any 300 or 400 level advanced course in the chosen foreign language
Any 300 or 400 level course in history or sociology, which focuses on the history or culture of the chosen foreign language

General Elective Courses

Any 200 level (or above) course (or courses) in the chosen foreign language not used to satisfy the Language Requirement above.
Any economics or political science course in international issues not used to satisfy the Economics or Political Science elective above.
Any history or sociology course in history or culture of the chosen foreign language not used to satisfy the Additional Upper Division Elective course above.

Note

The Program Coordinator must approve certificate participants’ course programs. Other courses may be substituted at the discretion and approval of the Program Coordinator.
