Economics Major: Applied Economics Concentration

To transfer to the applied economics major, a student already enrolled at UMass Dartmouth in another major (or undeclared) must first complete ECO 231, Principles of Microeconomics; and ECO 232, Principles of Macroeconomics, and receive a grade point average of 2.5 or higher in these two courses with have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Notes
Students must achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.000 in courses required for the Economics major.
College of Arts and Sciences Requirements
In addition to the requirements in the major and University Studies requirements, students will be required to complete the following courses. Courses taken for University Studies may also count for College of Arts and Sciences requirements.
Introduction to Arts & Sciences
This course is required for all students in the College of Arts and Sciences, typically taken during the first semester.
Critical Writing and Reading: 6 credits
Literature: 6 credits
Literature in English, literature in a global language or global literature in translation. Departments of English, Global Languages and Cultures, and Portuguese shall specify which courses satisfy the requirements.
Natural Science: 6 credits
Courses taught in Chemistry, Biology, Medical Laboratory Science, Physics and the following additional courses in Nursing, Marine Science and Engineering: NUR105 (now BIO 105), MAR110, EGR101, EGR157, EGR203 and MTX105.
Humanities: 3 credits
Choose from History, Philosophy (including logic), Art History, and Music (excluding applied courses).
Social Science: 6 credits
Choose from Policy Studies, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology/Anthropology/Crime and Justice Studies. In addition, courses in Women and Gender Studies may be used to fulfill the Social Science distribution requirement unless they are cross-listed with a humanities department course (in which case they may count towards the humanities requirement) or cross-listed with a literature course (in which case they may count towards the literature requirement).
Applied Data and Math: 6 credits
Choose 6 credits from: CIS180, DAN231, DAN301, MTH150, MTH151, MTH204, or MTH280.
Language Requirement
Must satisfy a language requirement in one of the following ways:
- Completion of a 102-level course in a language other than English, or
- Completion of 6 credits of cultural appreciation classes offered by the Global Languages and Cultures Department or Portuguese Department, or
- Satisfactory performance in both oral and written UMass Dartmouth proficiency tests if a student has equivalency at the 102 level in French, German, Italian, Latin, Portuguese or Spanish. No academic credits are awarded for satisfactory performance on these tests. Proficiency tests are administered for all incoming students and transfers on orientation dates if requested, or
- Satisfactory score on the ETS Achievement Test, the Advanced Placement Test or the Advanced Placement Literature Test, or
- Satisfactory score on the CLEP Examination – or the TOEFL Examination, combined with a writing sample, an oral examination and the written permission of the chairperson of the Department of Global Languages and cultures, or
- Completion of American Sign Language certification at the 102 level. Academic credits will be awarded for American Sign Language courses, provided they are taken at a regionally accredited institution of higher learning. If the student has completed the sequence of American Sign Language courses, the student will receive up to 12 transfer credits in the equivalent of foreign language elective credit at the corresponding level, or
- Passing the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI). Documentation of a passing score is required and the student will receive six credits by exam.
No credit is awarded to students who have received advanced standing or satisfied the language requirement by passing the appropriate test or by a reduction in the requirement.
Degree Requirements
A sufficient number of courses must be elected so that the earned credits total a minimum of 120. Certain majors require more than 120 credits.
At least 30 credits must be in courses numbered 300 or higher, exclusive of experiential learning.
Quality Requirement
A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00 out of a possible 4.00 is required of all students. A grade point average of at least 2.00 is also required in courses in the major field. Individual departments may establish higher quality requirements.
Program Outcomes
After completing the major in applied economics, students will be able to:
- Explain fundamental theories, concepts, and analytical methods of microeconomics and macroeconomics.
- Apply the general concepts learned from principles of economics to specific fields of economics.
- Apply mathematical tools and techniques and evaluate the results obtained from such application to analyze economic problems.
- Compare and evaluate the costs and benefits of various government policies.
- Communicate, in writing and orally, fundamental economic theories, concepts, analytical methods, and policy choices.
