BA degree
Students may declare a Portuguese Major at any time during their academic career, including at the time of admission to the university as an incoming freshman or transfer student. It is possible for students to start Portuguese at UMass Dartmouth and become majors by taking intensive language courses. Majors are required to complete a minimum of 30 credits of Portuguese coursework. A minimum grade point average of 2.0 in Portuguese courses is required for graduation. Students are strongly encouraged to take elective courses in art history, history, political science and anthropology/sociology related to Brazil, Cape Verde and Portugal.
Upon completion of the major, students are expected to speak fluently, write effectively and read critically in Portuguese. A degree in Portuguese offers access to careers in education, translation, business, international relations, print and visual media, social and non-profit/non-governmental organizations, politics and other fields.
