PHL 311 - Philosophy of Language3 credits Prerequisites: Semester course in Philosophy, or permission of instructor An examination of how language relates to the world and to thought. Topics will include the nature of meaning, truth, metaphor, and linguistic competence; speech act theory; and the relationship between syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Applications of formal logic to the understanding of language are also explored. Readings will include literature from both philosophy and psycholinguistics.
