Mathematics Major: Applied & Computational Mathematics - BS

In order to meet the needs of our present-day computer-oriented society, the Mathematics Department offers an alternative to the mathematics major: an applied and computational mathematics program leading to the BS degree. This program requires a core of math computing courses and emphasizes the applied mathematics areas. This program allows the student a large choice of electives within the context of applied and computational mathematics. The student can thus pursue his or her special interests in any particular phase of applied and computational mathematics.

The program has exactly the same freshman and sophomore requirements as the other degree options in mathematics.

A BS degree in Applied & Computational Mathematics (MTHC) allows the student to enter graduate programs that specialize in computing-oriented mathematics or enter industrial employment where physical and industrial problems are analyzed mathematically.

The program offers a large choice of electives within the context of computing-oriented mathematics. The student can thus pursue his or her special interests in any particular phase of computing-oriented mathematics.

Students must complete the required Applied & Computational Mathematics core courses including Math US-5A and 5B.

Also, students must take 9 credits of recommended Mathematics electives at the 300 level or higher and 3 credits of Technical electives.

All math courses counting for the major must be completed with a C- or higher.

Technical Electives

Three (3) credits of technical electives are required. The Technical Elective includes any major level class in Data Science, Computer Information Science, Physics or Engineering (DSC101, CIS115, CIS180, CIS215 or CIS261 can be used).

Additional Requirements

Students are also required to complete:

Physics 113 (Classical Physics I) and Physics 114 (Classical Physics II)
6 credits of a science elective at the major level in addition to PHY 113 and PHY 114
6 credits of literature (US 3A)
18 credits of Humanities/Social Science (at least 6 of each and no more than 6 in one department)

Students must also complete all College Studies and University Studies requirement for their degree.
